Built Around Acoustic Sessions You Won't Hear Elsewhere
The station launched on December 21, 2018 as one of two new DAB+ spin-offs from Virgin Radio UK, built around acoustic singer-songwriters including Damien Rice, James Bay, George Ezra, The Lumineers and Amy Winehouse. Alongside that core playlist, the station also airs acoustic sessions recorded exclusively for Virgin Radio, giving listeners versions of songs they genuinely cannot hear performed quite the same way anywhere else.
Launched Alongside a Big Breakfast Shake-Up
Virgin Radio Chilled's debut was timed to coincide with a bigger moment for the Virgin Radio brand: the arrival of the new Chris Evans Breakfast Show, which launched across the Virgin Radio family on January 21, 2019. In its early days, Chilled carried that same breakfast programming alongside the main station before settling into its own dedicated acoustic schedule.
A Rotating Cast of Weekend Voices
Like many digital spin-off stations, Virgin Radio Chilled leans on a rotating roster of cover presenters to keep its schedule fully staffed, with broadcaster Mark Wogan among those brought in to cover shows on the station as recently as October 2024.
