Still broadcasting after its AM switch-off
Smooth Suffolk is part of the national Smooth Radio network, and like several of Smooth's county-level outlets, it lost its AM frequency when owner Global switched off those transmitters across the network on 30 June 2023, continuing instead on DAB digital radio, according to Wikipedia's history of the Smooth network. The Smooth brand itself traces back to Jazz FM, which rebranded across the UK in the mid-2000s after research found the word "jazz" was turning listeners away, part of the same wave of consolidation that eventually folded dozens of local adult contemporary stations into one national identity.
Broadcasting over a county built on wool and buried kings
Suffolk's wealth was built centuries before radio existed. From the 13th century, merchants sold raw English wool to the weavers of Flanders, and the fortunes it generated paid for the timber-framed houses and churches still standing in towns like Lavenham, Hadleigh and Long Melford, according to Visit Suffolk's overview of the county. Lavenham in particular is often called the best-preserved of England's medieval wool towns, having largely skipped the Industrial Revolution that reshaped so much of the rest of the country. The county's older history runs deeper still: the ship burial excavated at Sutton Hoo in 1938 and 1939, believed to hold the remains of an Anglo-Saxon East Anglian king, remains one of Britain's richest archaeological finds.
