Born Out of a 2019 Royalty Shutdown
The station began in the summer of 2015 as one of just two stations under what became the 24/7 Online Radio Group, a small operation streaming light, relaxing music over the internet. That early setup nearly ended in late 2019, when the group's streaming provider Radionomy shut down its royalty-paying service entirely, cutting off the infrastructure the stations depended on. Rather than close down, the team relaunched in December 2019 with two new flagship stations, Classical Radio International and Jazz Radio International, and kept building from there.
A Network Built Around Non-PRO Music
That relaunch set the template for everything that followed. The group now runs roughly twenty branded stations, and every one of them, including 24/7 Online Radio itself, sticks to what the group calls completely royalty-free licensed music, sourced directly from composers, independent artists and production libraries that sit outside the traditional performing rights organizations. The idea is straightforward: the people who made the music get paid a fee they agreed to upfront, instead of the station relying on blanket PRO licensing that mostly benefits already-established acts.
A Side Project in Music Psychology
Alongside the stations themselves, the group also runs a Centre for Music Psychology, a small research and education hub that explores why calm, licensed-for-relaxation music like the lounge, smooth jazz, piano and Bossa Nova mix on 24/7 Online Radio actually works on listeners. It is an unusual pairing for a small internet radio operation, pairing a stated mission of supporting independent artists with genuine curiosity about the listening experience itself.
