A Follow-Up to a Dance Station That Took Off
Global launched Capital Chill across the UK on February 13, 2023, pitching it as a dedicated home for chilled beats inside the wider Capital family, according to World DAB. The station arrived as a direct follow-up to Capital Dance, which had launched in October 2020 and grown to nearly a million weekly listeners by the time Global decided the Capital brand had room for a second, slower-paced dance spin-off.
Built on a Genre Born in a London Club, Not Ibiza
Chill music's roots are often credited to Ibiza, but the term itself traces back to London. The White Room at the Heaven nightclub started running a dedicated chill-out space in 1989, staffed by DJs Jimmy Cauty and Alex Paterson, who would go on to form The Orb, according to Wikipedia's history of chill-out music. The idea was simple: give dancers somewhere to slow down, drink water and recover before heading back to the main floor. Ibiza's Café del Mar later turned that same instinct into a global sound and a record label, but the genre's first home was a side room in a London club, not a sunset terrace.
Losing Its National DAB Slot
Capital Chill launched with national coverage on DAB digital radio, the Global Player app and smart speakers. That changed in September 2024, when Global launched two more new stations, Capital Anthems and Smooth 80s, onto the UK's second national digital radio multiplex. With only so much space available on that multiplex, Capital Chill was the station Global chose to drop from the national DAB lineup, a reminder that even a station with real listener numbers can lose its terrestrial slot once a parent company needs the spectrum for something newer.
Still On Air, Just Not on the Dial
Losing national DAB did not take Capital Chill off the air. It remains available on smart speakers, the Global Player app, Sonos systems and online, carrying the same mix of deep house, ambient dance and chillout classics it launched with. For a station built around slowing down rather than chasing the loudest trend, streaming has turned out to be a perfectly natural home.
