Born in the year French radio broke free
RFM, short for Radio Fréquence Musique, was founded by Patrick Meyer and began broadcasting on June 6, 1981, according to Wikipedia's entry on the station. That launch date placed it right at the start of France's "radios libres" era, when new private stations were finally able to broadcast legally after decades of state broadcasting monopoly. RFM started out independent before eventually being folded into what is now Lagardère News.
Turning into "the golden radio"
RFM found its defining format in September 1994, repositioning itself as what French listeners came to call "la radio en or," the golden radio, built around French and international hits spanning the 1960s through the 1990s. The bet paid off fast: the station reportedly doubled its audience within 18 months and tripled it within four years, cementing RFM as a leading destination for decades of hit music rather than just current chart tracks.
