France's Pop-Rock Radio Station Live

Listen Now

RTL2 streams pop-rock music around the clock from Paris, mixing chart hits with soft rock staples for a broad French audience, and you can hear it live and free on Radio Shuffle from anywhere. The station brands itself around a simple pitch: "RTL2 ce n'est pas de la radio, c'est de la musique," RTL2 is not radio, it's music.

Born out of a dance station merger

RTL2's history runs through several names before it ever became RTL2. The frequency began as Maxximum from 1989 to 1992, then merged at midnight on 6 January 1992 with the Métropolys network to form M40, according to the French Wikipedia entry on Maxximum. The RTL group then took over the frequency, rebranding it RTL1 in 1992 without seeking approval from France's broadcast regulator, the CSA. When the regulator finally authorized the new format on 18 January 1995, it did so under a different name: RTL2. The station's original sound leaned toward soft rock, aimed squarely at a young adult audience the RTL group wanted to reach.

The pop-rock reference point

Over the following decades, RTL2 built its identity around the slogan "le son pop-rock," created by Rodolphe Ecarlat and Jean-Philippe Denac, and it has stuck to that pop-rock lane ever since, according to a profile from Gralon's radio coverage. The current schedule runs shows like Le Double Expresso in the morning alongside Pop-Rock Station and Pop-Rock Party, with longtime host Grégory Ascher part of the lineup since 2004 and Justine Salmon and Arnaud Tsamere rounding out more recent programming.

Part of one of France's biggest radio groups

RTL2 sits inside the wider RTL Group, one of the dominant players in French commercial radio alongside its namesake station RTL. That backing has let RTL2 maintain a national reach and a consistent format for three decades, holding steady as a pop-rock alternative to the more talk-driven programming of its sister station and the more urban-leaning formats of competitors like Skyrock and NRJ.

Three decades of the same pop-rock lane

From a contested rebrand in 1992 to a regulator-approved relaunch in 1995 through to today's morning shows, RTL2 has spent thirty years refining a single formula rather than chasing format changes. Listen to RTL2 free on Radio Shuffle to hear pop-rock radio the way France has tuned into it for a generation.
