The French Station That Spent 15 Years as Virgin Radio Before Taking Its Name Back

Listen Now

Europe 2 Classics carries a name that disappeared from French airwaves for fifteen years. The station spent that entire stretch broadcasting as Virgin Radio, a rebrand that eventually got quietly reversed once the name it replaced turned out to be worth more than the one that replaced it.

Launched by Lagardère in 1986

Europe 2 launched as a French pop and rock network on 1 December 1986, owned from the start by the media group Lagardère. The station built a following on the same kind of pop-rock anthems this classics stream now revisits, positioning itself as a French alternative to the country's news-heavy talk radio giants.

A Richard Branson Rebrand

On 1 January 2008, at midnight, following a farewell broadcast retracing the station's own history, Europe 2 officially became Virgin Radio, with launch announcements delivered by Richard Branson himself. French broadcasting authorities had approved the licensing deal the previous July, and for the next decade and a half the station operated entirely under the Virgin name.

Why the Virgin Name Stopped Making Sense

That arrangement unwound on 1 January 2023, when the station reverted to Europe 2. Lagardère's own explanation centered on strengthening the brand's footing in francophone territory, and the timing lined up with a set of practical problems: Virgin's international identity had grown murkier post-Brexit, its association in France with non-alcoholic drinks undercut the radio brand, and the Virgin licence itself reportedly cost the group around 400,000 euros a year to keep. Virgin Radio had also slid to a historic low of just 2.6 percent cumulative audience share, and the rebrand back to Europe 2 was aimed squarely at winning back listeners aged 25 to 49 who wanted pop-rock radio with a name they already trusted.

A Classics Stream Built on a Revived Identity

This Classics stream is a direct product of that 2023 decision, carrying the Europe 2 name into a dedicated feed of the pop and rock anthems that defined the network before, during, and after its fifteen years as Virgin. Few French stations have gone through a rebrand that visible and then walked it back this completely, making the name on this station less a marketing label than a genuine piece of French radio history reclaimed.
