Born Out of Germany's Rave Scene
Eurodance traces back to the late 1980s in central Europe, where a German party scene built on Chicago house and Belgian new beat took hold by 1987, according to the genre's Wikipedia entry on Eurodance. What started as an underground rave sound would, within a few years, become one of the most recognizable pop exports Europe ever produced.
Frankfurt's Sound and the Snap! Breakthrough
Snap!'s 1990 single "The Power" is widely credited with pushing the genre into the European mainstream. Frankfurt became a hub for the sound that followed, producing acts like Jam & Spoon and Culture Beat, whose 1993 single "Mr. Vain" went on to become the best selling single in Europe that year. Producer Torsten Fenslau, who worked on that track, is remembered as a pioneer of what fans call the Sound of Frankfurt.
The Belgian-Dutch Powerhouse
Some of the genre's biggest names came out of a Belgian-Dutch partnership. 2 Unlimited was founded in Antwerp in 1991 by producers Jean-Paul De Coster and Phil Wilde, fronted by Dutch performers Ray Slijngaard and Anita Doth. Tracks like "No Limit" defined what fans consider the genre's golden era, a run that lasted until the mid 1990s before the sound sped up into the higher tempo NRG style and eventually gave way to progressive house by decade's end.
Still Playing the Era, Decades Later
Most of the acts that built eurodance have long since stopped touring, but the genre never really went away online. Dedicated internet stations like this one keep the format alive for a listener base that never stopped wanting the sound, streaming the same high tempo catalog that once filled clubs across the continent, without needing a single new act to keep the playlist going.
