Radio Scoop Clermont streams pop, dance and today's biggest hits free on Radio Shuffle, broadcasting on 98.8 FM across Clermont-Ferrand and the wider Puy-de-Dôme and Allier departments. It is the Auvergne antenna of a national French network built from a single Lyon station that started out rebroadcasting NRJ before carving out its own identity.
Born From a Joke About NRJ's Logo
Radio Scoop traces back to April 5, 1982, when Lyon insurance businessman Daniel Perez launched a private local station from a borrowed villa on Mont Cindre, according to the station's history. The name itself came out of a conversation that same year between Perez and Jean-Paul Baudecroux, the founder of NRJ, who showed off his network's new logo and told Perez, "look, that's a scoop." Two years later the station briefly operated under the name NRJ Lyon Scoop while rebroadcasting NRJ's programming in Lyon, before regaining its own frequency and identity by the late 1980s.
A Founding Member of France's Independent Radio Movement
Radio Scoop's independence became institutional on November 1, 1992, when it joined the founding members of the GIE Les Indépendants, the cooperative that grew into today's Les Indés Radios, the umbrella group representing France's independent local and regional stations against the country's national networks. That membership has shaped how Radio Scoop expanded ever since, growing from its Lyon base into a network of local antennas rather than a single national signal.
Arriving in Clermont-Ferrand in 2002
The Clermont-Ferrand antenna launched in 2002 on 98.8 MHz, giving Auvergne its own locally produced slot within the wider Radio Scoop network. Six years later, in 2008, the station picked up an additional frequency in Vichy, also on 98.8 MHz, extending its reach into the Allier department and strengthening its footprint across the region. The network kept building from there, and by the summer of 2023 Radio Scoop had added DAB+ digital transmitters across Auvergne, including sites in Clermont-Ferrand, Issoire, Thiers, Saint-Flour, Moulins, Vichy and Montluçon, according to a detailed history of the station's frequency rollout.
On the Sleeve of Clermont Foot's Jerseys
Radio Scoop has been an official partner of Clermont Foot 63 for more than two decades, a relationship renewed in 2024 that now runs through 2030, as reported by the club itself. The station's logo has a physical presence on the pitch, appearing on the left sleeve of the professional team's jerseys during every championship match, and Radio Scoop has covered the club's biggest moments, including its promotions up the French football pyramid and matches at Stade Gabriel-Montpied. It is the kind of sponsorship that only makes sense for a station that sees itself as part of the city's everyday life rather than just a broadcaster passing through.
A City Known for Volcanoes and Tires
Clermont-Ferrand sits in the shadow of the Chaîne des Puys, a line of dormant volcanic cones that includes the Puy de Dôme, and the city is also the historic headquarters of tire manufacturer Michelin, giving it a split identity as both a volcanic landscape and an industrial hub. A station broadcasting pop and dance hits into that mix gives Auvergne listeners a soundtrack that has nothing to do with lava fields or rubber plants, just music for the daily commute through a region most famous for neither.
