Ninety Years on Air, Under Four Different Names
Antena 1 traces back to August 4, 1935, when it launched as Emissora Nacional, the Estado Novo regime's state broadcaster, airing nine hours of programming a day built around the values of Portugal's dictatorship at the time, according to the station's Wikipedia history. The name changed twice more, becoming RDP Programa 1 after Portugal's 1974 Carnation Revolution and then settling on Antena 1 in 1981, the name it carried for over four decades before a 2026 rebrand to RTP Antena 1.
Caught Up in a Revolution
Emissora Nacional was not at the center of the Carnation Revolution itself on April 25, 1974, but the station's facilities were occupied by the Armed Forces Movement in the days that followed, and state censorship over Portuguese radio ended in that same period. A station built to broadcast Estado Novo propaganda for nearly four decades found itself reshaped practically overnight into something closer to the public broadcaster it is today.
From Propaganda to Portugal's Generalist Voice
That transformation turned Antena 1 into a full-service generalist station, built around news, current affairs and sport rather than any single ideology, while its music programming settled into an adult contemporary format with a strong emphasis on Portuguese artists specifically. It broadcasts on FM between 87.7 and 106.7 MHz and on mediumwave, reaching across mainland Portugal and its island territories as one of the three national channels run by Rádio e Televisão de Portugal.
