From State Broadcaster to Commercial Powerhouse

The station launched on May 1, 1967 as Radio Port Natal, broadcasting out of SABC studios on Old Fort Road in Durban, according to the station's own history. It later rebranded as RPN Stereo once it upgraded to stereo broadcasting, before the station was sold to the Kagiso Media Group on July 1, 1994, the moment that turned a state-run regional service into the commercial broadcaster known today as East Coast Radio.

A Signal That Reaches Three Countries

Now broadcasting from Umhlanga on frequencies between 94.00 and 95.90 MHz, East Coast Radio covers KwaZulu-Natal along with parts of the Eastern Cape and Free State, and its signal even extends into Swaziland, a reach that goes well beyond most regional South African stations.

Gold Alongside the Hits

Alongside its contemporary hit format, East Coast Radio runs East Coast Gold, a stream launched in 2019 that gives listeners access to music dating back to the 1960s, built for an audience that wants the station's hits without losing access to decades of back catalogue. The station's on-air lineup includes Darren Maule, Carmen Reddy and J Sbu among its roster of weekday and weekend hosts, and it shares ownership under Kagiso Media with sister station Jacaranda FM in Pretoria.
