Rádio Renascença is a Portuguese national radio station that broadcasts news, talk and general-interest programming, and you can listen live and free on Radio Shuffle from anywhere in the world. It is the flagship of Grupo Renascença Multimédia, which also owns RFM and Mega Hits FM, and its stream is a good way to hear what Portugal is talking about right now.
What You Will Hear
Rádio Renascença is a generalist station, mixing national news bulletins with talk, culture and community stories, along with programmes with a religious dimension. It is broadcast in European Portuguese, so it is useful for anyone learning the language or following Portuguese affairs. The group's news site, rr.sapo.pt, carries the same reporting online.
Founded by the Church, Remembered for a Song
According to Wikipedia, the station was founded in 1934 by Monsignor Lopes da Cruz as a Catholic-owned broadcaster, began trial broadcasts in June 1936 and started regular transmissions on 1 January 1937. Its name comes from a Catholic magazine that had campaigned for it since 1933.
Its most famous moment came on the night of the Carnation Revolution. Just after midnight on 25 April 1974, the station broadcast a banned song that served as a signal to the military forces who overthrew the dictatorship. It made the radio a symbol of Portugal's road to democracy.
Surviving the Aftermath
After a brief occupation by workers in 1975, Rádio Renascença was returned to Church control and, unlike nearly all other Portuguese radio stations, avoided nationalisation. It expanded its religious programming and began regionalising its output in 1985. Today it sits at the centre of Grupo Renascença Multimédia, whose sister station RFM is the most listened-to station in Portugal. In March 2026 the station introduced a redesigned logo and new sonic branding.
