Built by a Broadcaster Leaving His Old Network
EsRadio began broadcasting on September 7, 2009, launched by Federico Jiménez Losantos after he left COPE, Spain's Catholic Church-linked broadcaster, together with fellow presenters Luis Herrero and César Vidal. According to coverage of its founding, the new station launched after Madrid's regional government awarded a broadcasting license to Unidad Liberal Radio Madrid, a company split 55 percent to Libertad Digital, the online news group Jiménez Losantos founded and still leads, and 45 percent to Unidad Editorial.
Rebuilding an Audience Through Podcasts
The move away from COPE came at a real short-term cost. Jiménez Losantos's audience had topped 1.5 million listeners there, and that figure fell to roughly 300,000 once he moved to esRadio's more limited FM footprint. The station found a way back into relevance anyway, partly through its morning show, Es la mañana de Federico, becoming one of the most downloaded political talk podcasts in the country, a format that let the show reach well beyond esRadio's physical broadcast range. A formal alliance with the newspaper El Mundo, struck in June 2017, deepened that reach further, bringing cross-promotion, shared advertising, and live broadcasts from El Mundo's own newsroom into the mix.
