A Volunteer Newsroom, On Air 24 Hours a Day

RTV Apeldoorn describes itself simply as "dé lokale omroep voor de gemeente Apeldoorn," the local broadcaster for the municipality of Apeldoorn, and runs its radio, television and internet programming 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Volunteers produce the daily radio programming from the station's own studio, covering regional news, sports, culture and education for a city whose population sits around 165,000.

A City Shaped by Forest and Royalty

Apeldoorn sits on the edge of the Veluwe, the largest forested area in the Netherlands, a geography that has shaped the city since William III of Orange built the royal summer residence Paleis Het Loo here in the 17th century, a palace the House of Orange-Nassau held until 1975. That mix of royal history and forest landscape is the backdrop Radio Apeldoorn's local coverage sits against every day.

The Veluwe's Other Radio Landmark

The same stretch of forest that surrounds Apeldoorn is also home to one of the most historically significant radio sites anywhere in the world. Built between 1918 and 1923 some 12 kilometers from the city, Radio Kootwijk was the Netherlands' transoceanic transmitter station, the place where, in 1928, a radio-telephone connection first let the Dutch speak directly to what was then the Dutch East Indies, opened with Queen Wilhelmina's words "Hello, Bandoeng." The transmitter masts are long gone, blown up by occupying forces at the end of the Second World War and finally dismantled in 1980, but the monumental concrete building still stands on the heather moorland as a nationally protected monument, a reminder that this corner of the Netherlands was once at the center of global radio history well before Radio Apeldoorn ever went on air.

Tune In

Radio Apeldoorn carries on a much more local version of that same radio tradition today, covering the city and its surrounding Veluwe forest for residents who want their news close to home. Stream it free on Radio Shuffle anytime.
