Born From a Revolution
Rádio Comercial's roots trace back to Rádio Clube Português, founded in 1930 and later absorbed into state broadcaster Rádiodifusão Portuguesa following the Carnation Revolution of 1975, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. Rádio Comercial itself formally launched on March 12, 1979, with informal broadcasts starting a few days earlier on March 1. The name "Comercial" was chosen for a simple regulatory reason: it was the only RDP station permitted to carry advertising at the time, an unusual position for a state-owned broadcaster to hold.
A Helicopter for Traffic Reports
Even under state ownership through the 1980s, Rádio Comercial pushed technical boundaries for Portuguese radio, becoming the first station in the country to use a helicopter for live traffic reporting in 1986. That willingness to spend on production quality carried through the station's later ownership changes, first through a 1993 privatization by the Correio da Manhã newspaper group, then a 1997 acquisition by Media Capital that repositioned the station entirely around rock music for listeners aged 25 to 35, before a 2002 pivot back toward contemporary hit radio under new strategy from executive Pedro Tojal.
A Comeback Built on Comedy
One of the station's sharpest turnarounds came in November 2009, when presenter Nuno Markl returned to Rádio Comercial with his segment Caderneta de Cromos, sparking a genuine surge in audience engagement that helped rebuild the station's ratings momentum. Markl remains part of the current lineup alongside Pedro Ribeiro and Vasco Palmeirim, running daytime, evening, and weekend programming under the station's current owner, German media group Bauer Media, which bought Media Capital's radio division in 2022.

Rádio Comercial has spent more than a decade at the top of Portugal's radio rankings, holding the number one position for its twelfth consecutive year as of 2025 and reaching 3.4 million listeners across every region of the country. In the fourth wave of 2021 ratings, the station hit 19.4 percent of accumulated daily audience, the highest figure any station has ever recorded in the history of Portuguese radio, a record that still stood as its own high-water mark years later.
