Born as a Dairy State Call Sign
The station signed on January 19, 1948 under the call letters WKOW, a nod to Wisconsin's dairy heritage, before switching in 1971 to WTSO, shorthand for its 1070 AM frequency. It spent its first decades cycling through formats, starting as a country station, then moving to talk as listeners drifted to FM, before settling into adult standards.
From ESPN Affiliate to The Big 1070
The station found its lasting identity in 2000, when it switched to an all-sports format as an ESPN Radio affiliate. It left ESPN on January 1, 2009 and rebranded as The Big 1070, picking up Fox Sports Radio programming and a brief run with NBC Sports Radio as it built out its own local sports lineup under iHeartMedia ownership.
Wisconsin's First Cubs Radio Home
Through all of its name changes, the station has stayed a fixture of Wisconsin sports broadcasting. It was the first Wisconsin affiliate of the Chicago Cubs Radio Network, and it carries University of Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball, NASCAR races and high school championship coverage, a lineup aimed squarely at Madison's college town sports appetite. The station has since gone through further rebrands, running as 1070 The Game and now as Fox Sports 1070, though longtime listeners still know the signal as The Big 1070.
