Nearly a Century on the Air
KIRO's history on Seattle's airwaves stretches back to 1927, when it first signed on as KPCB at 650 kHz, according to its Wikipedia entry. The station moved to 710 kHz in 1937, picked up Seattle's CBS Radio Network affiliation around the same time, and boosted to a 50,000 watt signal in 1941, the clear-channel power level it still broadcasts at today.
From Music to News Talk to Sports
The station has reinvented its format more than once. Poor ratings with a music format in the 1970s pushed KIRO to rebuild itself as a news talk station modeled on San Francisco's KCBS. That talk identity carried the station for decades, including an 18 season run as the flagship station for the Seattle Mariners from 1985 to 2002.
A 2009 Pivot Into Full Time Sports
The modern KIRO 710 ESPN Seattle took shape around 2008 and 2009, when its news and talk programming, along with Seattle Seahawks broadcasts, moved over to sister station KIRO-FM. That left the AM frequency free to become a dedicated sports talk outlet, and the station returned as the Mariners' flagship in 2009, the same year it became an ESPN Radio Network affiliate. The move completed a decades-long drift from music, to talk, to sports that has defined the station's identity ever since.
