A student station built from scratch in 2020
Sleepy Hollow Radio launched in September 2020 as a BMI-licensed internet station based at Sleepy Hollow High School, run under station supervisor Michael A. Frank and supported by the Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns. Its stated mission is to give students hands-on experience across "the broad spectrum of radio broadcasting," and the schedule backs that up with a lineup that spans music shows, sports coverage, interview programs, classical music segments, film discussion, and even radio drama, produced entirely by the student body for a global online audience.
A village that renamed itself for a ghost story
The station's home village has its own remarkable backstory. Known as North Tarrytown for most of its history, the community voted in December 1996 to rename itself Sleepy Hollow, the setting Washington Irving chose for his story of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman. According to UPI's coverage of the vote, residents backed the change 1,304 to 710, a reversal of a similar 1988 referendum that had failed, driven largely by advocacy from the Sleepy Hollow Society and a village looking to rebuild tourism after losing the General Motors plant that had anchored its economy for decades.
Broadcasting from inside the legend
That means the students running today's Sleepy Hollow Radio are broadcasting from a town that deliberately chose to become synonymous with one of American literature's most enduring ghost stories, a branding decision made a generation before any of them were born. It gives a fairly typical student radio operation, talk shows, sports, music, and drama, a backdrop that few other high school stations in the country can claim.
