Angels Radio AM 830 is a sports talk station in Southern California that serves as the English-language flagship for Los Angeles Angels baseball. Its call sign is KLAA, it is licensed to Orange, California, and you can hear it live on Radio Shuffle for free, whether you are in Anaheim or halfway around the world.

What Angels Radio Broadcasts

According to Wikipedia's entry on KLAA, the station is a sports radio outlet on 830 kHz, running 50,000 watts by day and 20,000 at night, and branded Angels Radio AM 830. It carries Angels games in English alongside ESPN Radio programming, and the same entry notes past broadcasts of Anaheim Ducks hockey, Las Vegas Raiders games and USC football, plus weekend shows on horse racing, fishing and motorsports. Schedules change from season to season, so check the station's website for the current lineup.

From KMXE to KLAA

The frequency was formerly KMXE, a Spanish-language sports outlet. As Wikipedia records, Angels owner Arte Moreno's group bought it in February 2006 for 42 million dollars and renamed it KLAA, a call sign that stands for Los Angeles Angels. The broadcasting history of Angels radio shows the team moving games between stations for years, and owning a station gave it a permanent home. In time for the 2008 baseball season, AM 830 became the English-language outlet for Angels games, when the earlier contract with KSPN expired.

A Team Owning Its Own Station

KLAA is owned by LAA 1, LLC, a company made up of the owners and executives of the Angels and held separately from the baseball club. That is unusual in American sports, where most teams rent airtime from a broadcaster. Owning the signal means the team controls how its games sound, when they air and what surrounds them, which is why the station feels less like a generic sports channel and more like the team's own radio room.

Why AM Still Matters for Baseball

Baseball and AM radio have a long marriage: a nine-inning game is made for a car radio, a backyard or a kitchen counter. With 50,000 watts in the daytime, KLAA can reach much of Greater Los Angeles, and the stream on Radio Shuffle carries the same broadcast to fans who have moved away from Orange County but still want to hear a game.
