Launched in 1992 with 16 hours a week
ESPN Radio went on the air on January 1, 1992, starting modestly with just 16 hours a week of sports news and information, according to Wikipedia's history of the network. Keith Olbermann, long before his later television career, was one of the network's earliest on-air stars in that first year, helping establish a sports-talk format that had barely existed as a national radio category before ESPN built one around its own television brand.
A rotating cast of shows that defined sports radio
Over more than three decades, ESPN Radio has built and rebuilt its lineup around a series of genuinely influential programs. The Bruno & Golic Morning Show paired Tony Bruno with Mike Golic until 2000, when Mike Greenberg stepped in and the show became Mike & Mike, running all the way until 2017. The Dan Le Batard Show, co-hosted with Jon "Stugotz" Weiner, originated on Miami's WAXY before ESPN Radio carried it nationally until early 2021. Alongside those, the network has run The Dan Patrick Show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, and The Fabulous Sports Babe, a run of programming that Barrett Media's 30th-anniversary retrospective credits with shaping what national sports talk radio actually sounds like.
