The Netherlands' Funk, Soul and Jazz Radio Station

Listen Now

Sublime streams funk, soul, jazz, R&B and lounge free on Radio Shuffle, broadcasting from the Netherlands with a playlist that spans the 1960s through today. What started as a niche smooth jazz experiment in 2004 has grown into one of the country's most distinctive music brands, built on a sound most Dutch commercial radio never touches.

It Started as Arrow Classic Jazz

The station that became Sublime first went to air as Arrow Classic Jazz, running test broadcasts in February 2004 before launching regular programming that May, according to the station's history. Its earliest slogan, "Smooth Jazz," described exactly what listeners got, a tightly focused format built around modern jazz, blues and soul for an audience the big national pop stations were not serving at all.

A Slow Drift Into Funkier Territory

The station's identity loosened gradually rather than all at once. Between 2005 and 2012 its slogan shifted to "Cool, Funky Jazz," a sign that funk and soul were already creeping further into the rotation, before a rebrand in November 2012 dropped the Arrow Jazz FM name entirely in favor of Sublime FM, paired with a new logo and a "Just Good Music" tagline. By 2013 the station had settled on "Fresh, Jazzy Sounds," the version of its identity that still roughly describes the funk, soul, R&B, lounge and disco mix it plays today.

Changing Hands, Keeping the Sound

Ownership moved around behind the scenes well before the name did. Flux Media Factory BV sold Arrow Jazz FM to Exceed Jazz BV in November 2010, and the station has since folded into the broader portfolio of Mediahuis Nederland, the media group that also owns stations including SLAM!. Through all of that corporate reshuffling, the core programming commitment to jazz-adjacent, groove-based music never really changed, which is part of why longtime listeners could still recognize the station across three different names and at least two owners.

Candy Dulfer Got Her Own Show

The station has leaned into real musical credibility rather than just playing other people's records. In May 2012, Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer, internationally known for her funk and smooth jazz playing and her collaborations with Prince and Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, took over her own show on the station, a booking that signaled the kind of audience Sublime was chasing: listeners who wanted a host who actually lives inside the genre, not just someone reading a playlist.

Still Broadcasting After Losing Its FM Signal

Sublime stopped broadcasting on FM entirely on September 1, 2023, a significant shift for a station that had spent nearly two decades building an audience over the airwaves. Rather than disappearing, it kept going through cable, digital platforms and internet streaming, the same transition many niche-format stations across Europe have had to make as FM spectrum gets reallocated to bigger commercial players.
