Built From an Earlier Station's Foundations

JFSR officially launched on 2 September 2010 after three months of planning, a relaunch of sorts from a team that had cut its teeth on an earlier project called Morpher Radio. The station's roots trace to a founder who had been DJing since 1983, making JFSR the product of decades of soul and funk radio experience rather than a station built from scratch by newcomers to the format.

London's Deep History With Soul on the Dial

JFSR broadcasts into a UK soul scene with a genuinely radical history behind it. London's first dedicated soul station was Radio Invicta, a pirate broadcaster that launched in December 1970 under the slogan "Soul Over London" and used tower block rooftops to run illegal FM transmissions years before pirates elsewhere had moved past medium wave, according to Wikipedia's history of the station. Invicta ran until 1984 and was positioned early enough to introduce many Londoners to electro and hip hop sounds coming out of the US, long before those genres reached legal UK radio.

A Legal Home for a Once-Illegal Sound

That pirate soul tradition eventually found legitimate outlets through DJs like Robbie Vincent, who began broadcasting on BBC Radio London in October 1970 before moving to BBC Radio 1 in 1977 to host one of the first soul and disco shows on national British radio. JFSR sits downstream of that lineage, an internet station carrying forward a genre that British radio spent years trying to keep off the legal airwaves entirely, now broadcasting openly with a global roster of presenters championing both classic cuts and new independent soul artists.
