Soul Rhythms Radio UK streams soul, jazz, reggae, R&B, funk, house, and dancehall live from the United Kingdom, continuing a lineage of London radio built specifically to champion that sound. You can stream it free anytime on Radio Shuffle.
Soul Over London Started on a Rooftop
London's dedicated soul radio tradition did not begin in a licensed studio. Radio Invicta, broadcasting under the slogan "Soul over London" from December 1970 until July 1984, was the first British pirate station to specialize entirely in soul music, running from the rooftops of tower blocks rather than a ship at sea. According to accounts of that era, Invicta was followed by London Weekend Radio, JFM, Horizon, and Dread Broadcasting Corporation, stations built by and for communities, largely second-generation Caribbean Londoners, who felt shut out of mainstream British broadcasting and built their own platform for soul, funk, jazz, reggae, and early hip hop instead.
That wave of pirate stations eventually gave way to more durable outfits. Solar Radio launched as a pirate station in October 1984 under DJ Tony Monson, going off pirate airwaves in 1988 before relaunching on satellite in 1999 and later DAB, and it has kept a dedicated soul, jazz-funk, and house format running for decades through presenters including Clive Richardson, Marc Collins, and Lisa I'Anson.
A Genre List That Tells Its Own Story
Soul Rhythms Radio UK's own spread of genres, soul, jazz, reggae, R&B, funk, house, and dancehall, is almost a direct echo of what those original pirate stations were built to protect: a sound that mainstream British radio was slow to embrace, kept alive instead by stations willing to specialize in it completely rather than slot it into odd hours on a general playlist.
What You'll Actually Hear
Expect a flowing mix of classic soul cuts, jazz-funk, reggae and dancehall rhythms, and contemporary R&B, the same combination that has defined London's soul radio identity since stations first started broadcasting it from rooftops half a century ago.
Soul Rhythms Radio UK is free to stream on Radio Shuffle alongside thousands of other stations from around the world. Press play and tune into a tradition that never really went off air.
