Born in Lyon as France's first 24-hour jazz station
The network behind this channel traces back to January 10, 1996, when Christophe Mahesous launched Fréquence Jazz in Lyon, France's first jazz station broadcasting around the clock, according to the French Wikipedia history of the station. A Paris version followed later that year, and the network took the name Jazz Radio in June 2008 as it expanded onto new FM frequencies across central and southern France, then the north and east by the end of that year. A Swiss branch, Jazz Radio Suisse, extended the brand beyond France's borders.
One channel among dozens built for a single mood
Rather than running one broad jazz signal, the network splits its sound into dozens of specialized webradios, Black Music among them alongside siblings like Latin Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Afro Jazz, and Saxo Jazz. Black Music itself stays focused on soul, funk, gospel, and R&B, running continuously with no scheduled programming breaks, the kind of narrow-format commitment only a webradio network with dozens of channels can afford to offer.
Part of a genre with deep jazz roots
Pulling soul and funk under the same network as straight jazz channels reflects how closely the genres share a family tree, built on the same brass arrangements, groove-driven rhythm sections, and vocal phrasing that link James Brown to John Coltrane. Black Music leans into that overlap rather than forcing a line between jazz and the soul and funk it helped shape.
