Following in the footsteps of London's soul pirates
London Soul Radio broadcasts into a city with a genuinely deep soul radio lineage. Radio Invicta, widely considered Europe's first dedicated all-soul station, ran as a pirate broadcaster from December 1970 to July 1984 under the slogan "Soul over London," according to an account of the station's history. Invicta pioneered FM pirate broadcasting from London tower block roofs at a time when most illegal stations stuck to medium wave, and it launched the careers of DJs who went on to become genuine industry legends, including Gilles Peterson and Pete Tong. That underground tradition, built by soul fans determined to hear the music nowhere else on the dial would play, set the template that stations like London Soul Radio still follow today.
A station run by people who describe themselves simply
London Soul Radio describes its own team plainly: "a group of guys and girls who are passionate about soul music, and we love sharing it with you." That volunteer spirit shows in how the station operates, relying on listener donations to keep the music running uninterrupted rather than heavy commercial backing. The station has built a genuine audience around that approach, with more than 20,000 subscribers and over 150 individual radio shows produced, including long-running programs like Clive Brady's "Sound of Philly Records" and Michael Speaks' "Honey Soul Hour."
A genre-spanning playlist for a mature audience
Rather than lock into a single sound, the station's format spans classic soul, funk, disco, R&B, smooth jazz, gospel, rare groove, and soulful house, deliberately aimed at a more mature listening audience that grew up with these genres rather than a younger crowd chasing current chart hits. That breadth is part of what the station describes as a musical experience it says is not available anywhere else in the UK.
