Spain's First Thematic Radio Station
LOS40, originally Los 40 Principales, began life as a chart countdown show on Radio Madrid, now Cadena SER, in 1966, before spinning off into its own independent station in 1979 under the PRISA group. It became Spain's first thematic radio station, built entirely around a Top 40 format rather than the mixed news and entertainment schedules typical of the era, and has stayed a dominant force in Spanish commercial radio for six decades since.
The Voice That Defined a Generation of Spanish Pop Radio
Much of LOS40's cultural weight rests on broadcasters who became stars in their own right, none bigger than Joaquín Luqui. He joined the station in 1969 and spent decades building an unmistakable on-air style across shows including El Gran Musical, 3, 2 ó 1 and Los Mundos de Luqui, earning the 1998 Ondas Award for best music program host. Spanish radio history is genuinely difficult to discuss without his name, and the music he championed on air across the 1980s and 90s forms much of the backbone of what LOS40 Classic now plays.
