From Children's Radio to National Hit Station
Europa FM launched in 1996 as a children's radio station, an unusual starting point for a brand that would later become one of Spain's biggest music stations. The format changed completely in 1999, when it relaunched as a pop and pop-rock hit radio station, and it has kept that identity ever since under parent company Atresmedia, the media group that also runs Onda Cero and sister music station Melodía FM.
Spain's Third-Biggest Music Station
That relaunch paid off. By 2015, Europa FM had grown into the third most-listened-to music station in the country, trailing only LOS40 and Cadena Dial, and it still pulls in over a million listeners nationally with shows aimed at an 18 to 35 audience. The Barcelona-based network reaches listeners through dozens of regional frequencies rather than one single signal, with this stream carrying the format into Gipuzkoa.
Broadcasting Into Basque Country's Coastal Heartland
Gipuzkoa gives the station a distinctive home region, anchored by San Sebastián's famous curved La Concha bay and a food culture regularly ranked among the best in the world. The province also borders France at Irún, making it a crossing point between Spanish and French Basque culture as much as a broadcast region in its own right.
