Classic FM 102.7 launched in Johannesburg on September 1, 1997, built as a philanthropic cultural project backed by the Liberty Foundation and modeled directly on the UK's Classic FM. For more than two decades it ran as South Africa's only full-time classical music station, a niche format with a loyal but small audience in Gauteng.
Business Rescue and a Forced Reinvention
That niche status eventually became a financial problem. In October 2019 the station entered business rescue, leading to staff retrenchments, before a group called The Professional Consortium took over the license. On July 1, 2021, the station rebranded entirely as Hot 1027, adopting what Wikipedia's account of the station calls an "old skool and R'n'B" format aimed at a far broader audience than classical music alone could support.
A Court Fight Over What "Classical" Actually Means
The rebrand did not go unchallenged. Rival broadcasters Primedia and Kagiso filed complaints with South Africa's communications regulator Icasa, objecting both to how the rebrand was handled and to Hot 1027's decision to concentrate its required classical programming into overnight hours between 7pm and 5am rather than spreading it through the day. According to reporting on the resulting Pretoria High Court case, the station's broadcast license still obligated it to air classical music for half of its total daily content, and the court sided with Hot 1027's argument that the 50 percent requirement could be calculated across a full 24-hour cycle rather than only during peak daytime listening. The court did rule against the station on the separate question of rebranding procedure, referring that part of the dispute back to Icasa for a fine.
Two Stations on One Frequency
What this means in practice is unusual: the frequency that was once Classic FM 102.7 still delivers on its original classical promise, just entirely after dark, while daytime hours now belong to old school R&B and soul for a wider Johannesburg audience. It is a format split born directly out of a licensing fight rather than a programming choice, a station legally required to keep one foot in its original identity even after rebranding away from it.
