WYSU All Classical streams orchestral, chamber and solo classical music around the clock, a digital companion stream to Youngstown State University's public radio station in Ohio. It is free to stream right now on Radio Shuffle, anywhere in the world, no account required.
A Charter Member of NPR, Born in a Motel Room
WYSU signed on the air at 10:00 a.m. on October 23, 1969, broadcasting at 88.5 MHz from studios set up in room 310 of the former Valley Park Motel on Wick Avenue, according to the station's history. It launched as a charter member of National Public Radio, and announcer Bill Foster opened the very first broadcast with Richard Strauss' "Also sprach Zarathustra," a tone poem that would later become famous worldwide as the opening theme of "2001: A Space Odyssey."
From a Motel to a 50,000-Watt Signal
The station grew steadily out of that modest start. It moved into the newly built Cushwa Hall on the Youngstown State campus in 1976, expanded to a full 24-hour broadcast day by 1980, and installed a 50,000 watt transmitter on the WKBN tower in 1991, pushing its reach well beyond the Mahoning Valley. Translators added in Ashtabula in 1993 and New Wilmington, Pennsylvania in 1995 carried the signal even further into the surrounding region.
A Dedicated Classical Stream
WYSU added its All Classical digital stream in 2008, giving listeners who want nothing but classical music a dedicated channel separate from the main WYSU signal's NPR news and talk programming. It lets the university station serve two different audiences at once, the news and culture listeners on the main frequency and the classical music audience on this stream, without either one crowding out the other.
