Honolulu's Third FM Signal

The station signed on June 30, 1967, as KFOA-FM, becoming only the third FM station to broadcast in Honolulu, according to a history of the station on Wikipedia. The John Hutton Corporation bought the station in 1971 and renamed it KUMU-FM, pairing it with its AM sister station under a beautiful music format that would carry both stations to strong ratings for decades.

When Easy Listening Aged Out

That beautiful music format held through the 1980s before aging against a tide of advertisers chasing younger listeners through the 1990s. The station spent years finding its next identity before relaunching in 2010 with an old-school rhythm and blues direction branded Hawaii's Old Skool, a shift that finally gave KUMU a format built for a new generation of Honolulu listeners.

The Rhythm of Hawaii

KUMU refined that direction again in 2014, rebranding as The Rhythm of Hawaii under its current rhythmic adult contemporary format, mixing old-school R&B and hip-hop with slow jams and love songs. The station has also carried a nightly Quiet Storm program, a late-night slow jams tradition common to R&B radio nationwide, giving Honolulu listeners a dedicated after-dark mood alongside its daytime mix.

Broadcasting Over Waikiki

KUMU-FM transmits at 100,000 watts from atop the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Kalia Road, putting its signal directly over one of Hawaii's most recognizable stretches of coastline. Owned today by Pacific Radio Group, the station blends English and Hawaiian-influenced adult contemporary sounds with its R&B foundation, giving it a genre mix shaped as much by its island home as by mainland radio trends.
