One of Britain's First Two Commercial Stations

Capital Radio went on air in London on October 16, 1973, just eight days after the London Broadcasting Company, making it one of Britain's first two legal commercial radio stations after winning a hard-fought licensing contest against seven rival consortia (Wikipedia). The station launched with a broad "general and entertainment" format mixing drama, documentaries and light music, a far cry from the pop-driven station it would become. Money was tight in those early years, and investors repeatedly had to step in through the 1970s just to keep the station on air.

The Pivot to Pop That Saved It

That survival came down to a format change in 1974, when Capital shifted decisively toward pop music to chase a bigger audience, a move that turned its fortunes around and set the template the station still follows today. By 1988 the station had grown enough to split into two separate services, 95.8 Capital FM for music and Capital Gold for older hits, a structure that let the flagship signal focus entirely on current chart music without diluting it with nostalgia programming.

From a Single London Signal to a National Network

Capital's ownership consolidated over the following decades: the Capital Radio Group merged with GWR Group in 2005 to form GCap Media, which Global Radio acquired in 2008. Global's national ambitions for the brand culminated in 2019, when Capital's breakfast show went fully national for the first time, paired with eleven separate regional drivetime shows that keep a local flavor across the network's many frequencies. London, the station's original home, remains the flagship signal inside that much larger structure.

A City That Has Always Driven the UK Charts

London's outsized role in British pop culture gives Capital an unusually direct line to the music it plays. The city's recording studios, labels and arenas have anchored the UK charts for decades, and a station built specifically to chase whatever is dominating those charts right now has a natural home broadcasting from the city where so much of that music gets made and performed.
