Four DJs Brought Ibiza Home in 1987
The sound Heart Dance plays every day traces back to a single 1987 trip to Ibiza, where DJ Danny Rampling discovered the island's Balearic blend of soul, Italian disco, house and garage. He brought it back to London with friends Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker, spreading the sound through club nights and pirate radio. Rampling's own club night, Shoom, became one of the most important venues in early British house music before closing in 1989, a scene now widely treated as the root of the UK's entire rave culture.
Launched as Part of Global's Biggest Digital Expansion
Heart Dance itself is a far more recent addition, launched on June 21, 2019 as a digital sub-brand of Heart, broadcasting from Global's studios at Leicester Square in London. It reaches listeners nationally on the Digital One DAB multiplex and through Global Player, and added Sky channel 0128 that October, replacing the channel once held by Smooth Extra.
Breakfast and Weekend Simulcasts
Toby Anstis hosts the weekday Heart Dance Breakfast show along with a Friday evening "Heart's Club Classics" slot that simulcasts on the main Heart station, extending the format to a much wider audience. Pandora Christie takes over for Saturday evening club classics simulcasts, with Rezzy Ghadjar serving as the station's main relief presenter.
