Radio Trent's Four Decades on Air

The station's roots go back to Radio Trent, which launched on July 3, 1975 under Midlands Radio before GWR Group bought it in 1993. That original station carried the Trent FM name through more than three decades of East Midlands broadcasting before the modern Capital brand took over.

When the Government Said No to Simulcasting

In 1988, regulatory pressure against simulcasting the same programming on both AM and FM forced the station to split in two. The FM service kept the Trent FM name while its medium wave frequency launched as GEM-AM, standing for Great East Midlands, running oldies rather than the main station's contemporary format. GEM eventually became Solid Gold GEM AM, folded into the wider Classic Gold network, then was replaced in 2007 by a new network simply called Gold after Classic Gold and Capital Gold merged under GCap Media.

Three Stations Become One

Trent FM merged with two sister East Midlands stations, Leicester Sound and Ram FM, on January 3, 2011 to form Capital FM East Midlands under Global Radio. A further restructuring on April 8, 2019 folded the station into Capital Midlands alongside Capital Birmingham, trimming most local programming down to a three-hour weekday Drivetime show.

Presenters Who Passed Through

Over the decades the station's lineup included Sacha Brooks, Andi Durrant, Margherita Taylor, Rich Clarke and Andy Twigge, several of whom went on to other stations within the wider Capital and Global network after their time in Nottingham.
