Bremen Vier streams pop music and entertainment from Radio Bremen, the public broadcaster for Germany's smallest federal state. It first went on air on December 1, 1986, at 9:05 in the morning, with host Jürgen Büsselberg playing M's "Pop Muzik" as the station's opening track, according to Wikipedia's history of the station.
A Youth Wave That Kept Its Listeners
Bremen Vier launched as a Jugendwelle, a youth-oriented wave aimed at listeners from 14 to 49, and has held that format ever since. The catch is that its original audience simply aged in place rather than being replaced by new young listeners, pushing the station's average listener age to 39.7 years over time, closer to a mature adult audience than the teenagers the format was originally built for.
Building a Separate Station for Actual Teenagers
Rather than trying to drag Bremen Vier back toward a younger sound, Radio Bremen created an entirely new cross-media offering, Bremen NEXT, specifically aimed at listeners between 15 and 25. That split let Bremen Vier keep serving the audience it had actually grown with, while giving the broadcaster a genuinely young-skewing outlet elsewhere.
Broadcasting From Germany's Smallest State
Radio Bremen itself is the smallest of the nine regional broadcasters inside the ARD network, the legally mandated public broadcaster for the city-state of Bremen, with roots tracing back to the Nordische Rundfunk AG's first transmissions on May 2, 1924. Running Bremen Vier out of that small but long-established public broadcaster means the station has always had to compete for listeners with far larger regional networks nearby.
