One of Fifteen Streams Born From a 2018 Digital Push
Top 40 is one of a wave of themed webradio channels that 104.6 RTL rolled out in December 2018, when RTL Radio Center Berlin doubled its entire streaming portfolio to 45 web channels, splitting 15 new streams across each of its three stations, 104.6 RTL, 105.5 Spreeradio and 93.6 Jam FM, according to trade coverage of the expansion. The project covered listening situations far beyond the main station's broadcast day, from relaxation and workout music to decade-specific nostalgia and study-focused streams, built by the company's in-house Digital Media Hub with a new mobile-first web interface.
A Programming Director Who Wanted More Than Playlists
Marc Haberland, programming director at RTL Radio Center Berlin at the time, framed the expansion as a deliberate editorial choice rather than an algorithm-driven shortcut, telling trade press that "we don't simply make playlists; we leverage our music editors' capabilities" to build audio for every listening situation. That approach sat inside CEO Stephan Schmitter's broader "Audio-Total" strategy, which had already produced the skip-enabled "Swop" feature and the listener-voted "Arno hoch 3" format for the station's flagship morning show before turning its attention to webradio.
What You'll Hear
Where the flagship 104.6 RTL signal mixes hits with news, traffic and the comedy-driven Morgencrew breakfast show, Top 40 strips all of that away and keeps the focus purely on the songs currently climbing the charts. It is built for listeners who want Berlin's commercial pop pulse without the talk breaks, contests or giveaways that fill the main frequency.
