NDR Blue plays music away from the charts, pop, rock, jazz, hip-hop and alternative, picked by an editorial team that would rather dig up something new than repeat the top forty. There is a live concert most evenings starting at 8pm, plus music journalism segments that dig into what is actually happening in clubs and festivals across northern Germany. It streams free, right now, no app or subscription required.
Quietly Running Since 2008
NDR Blue did not launch with much fanfare. It began broadcasting on May 2, 2008 under the name NDR Musik Plus, with little public announcement at all, according to its entry on German Wikipedia. The station carried that name for four years before Norddeutscher Rundfunk renamed it NDR Blue on October 23, 2012, giving it the identity and tagline it still carries today, "Meet the Music."
Operated by NDR, the public broadcaster based in Hamburg, the station was built for listeners across the four states NDR serves: Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein. Its reach goes further than most digital-only stations, carried on DAB+, satellite, cable and online streaming.
Nachtclub and the Rest of the Schedule
The signature show is Nachtclub, hosted by Paul Baskerville among others, which anchors the station's late-night identity. Alongside it sit NDR Blue Morning and NDR Blue After Work, unmoderated music blocks for listeners who want the curation without the talk, an ESC Update segment tracking the Eurovision Song Contest, and NDR Blue in Concert, the strand that carries those nightly live sets. The station also folds in jazz and hip-hop programming repeated from sister NDR channels, giving it a wider range than its small team might suggest.
A Station on Borrowed Time
NDR announced on June 27, 2025 that NDR Blue will go off air on January 1, 2027 as part of broader cost reduction measures at the broadcaster, per the same Wikipedia history. That makes the window to discover it a little more pointed than usual, a station still actively booking concerts and chasing new music on a countdown to its own last broadcast.
How to Listen
NDR Blue streams free on Radio Shuffle. Press play above for curated pop, rock, jazz and alternative from northern Germany, while it is still on the air.
