Launched at 9:33 on New Year's Day
YES 933 went on air on January 1, 1990, timed deliberately to launch at 09:33 to match its frequency, according to the station's own history. It arrived as the Mandarin-language counterpart to the English hit station Perfect Ten, part of the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation's push to mark both its own 10th anniversary and Singapore's 25th year of independence with two new stations at once.
Built Up From an 18-Hour Schedule
The station started modestly under the internal name Radio 6, broadcasting only eighteen hours a day from 6am to midnight. Within the same year it stretched its hours to 2am, becoming the first Chinese-language radio station in Singapore to play music after midnight, before finally going fully 24 hours on May 1, 1994, four years after its original launch.
Five Straight Years at the Top
That steady expansion paid off. By 1997, YES 933 had become Singapore's most-listened-to radio station for five consecutive years running, a level of dominance across the entire market, not just within Mandarin-language radio. A 2025 Nielsen survey still put its average weekly audience at 1.22 million listeners, now owned by state broadcaster Mediacorp alongside sister stations Capital 95.8FM and Love 97.2FM.
