Built as the Mandarin Answer to Class 95
Love 972 launched on September 23, 1994, following test transmissions that began that June, and it was conceived from the start as the Mandarin-language counterpart to Class 95, Singapore's English-language upmarket adult contemporary station. Its name, which translates to "Best Loved Station" in Chinese, was chosen to target a very specific listener: bilingual professionals aged 30 to 40 from the middle to higher income bracket, the same demographic Class 95 had already proven out in English.
Launched With Borrowed Talent
Rather than building a brand-new on-air team from scratch, Love 972 launched with five deejays pulled from the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation and Rediffusion Singapore, giving the new station an experienced lineup from its very first broadcast rather than a blank slate.
A Signal That Travels Across the Strait
Now run by state broadcaster Mediacorp, Love 972 keeps its Mandopop and infotainment format aimed at the same professional audience it launched for, with a reach that extends past Singapore's own borders into Johor Bahru in Malaysia and Batam in Indonesia, the same cross-border footprint its English-language sibling Class 95 enjoys.
Tune In
From a carefully positioned 1994 launch to a cross-border Mandopop staple, Love 972 has spent three decades giving Singapore's bilingual professionals a station built specifically for them. Stream it free on Radio Shuffle anytime.
