Champagne, Jewellery and a Name Chosen From a Shortlist
Class 95 launched on April 1, 1990, part of the Singapore Broadcasting Corporation's 10th anniversary celebrations, and it arrived with a very specific audience in mind. According to the station's own history, its pre-launch television commercials leaned on imagery of champagne and jewellery to position it as an upmarket adult contemporary station, and the name itself was chosen from a shortlist of three candidates, Class, Light and Heart, before settling on the one that best captured that aspirational tone.
Singapore's Highest-Rated English Station
That positioning has held up remarkably well over three and a half decades. A 2022 Nielsen survey ranked Class 95 as Singapore's highest-rated English-language radio station and third-highest-rated station overall, pulling an average audience of 877,000 listeners, a scale most adult contemporary formats anywhere in the world would envy.
A Signal That Crosses Three Countries
Unlike many national stations confined to their own borders, Class 95's 95.0 MHz FM signal reaches well beyond Singapore itself, picked up across the causeway in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and as far as Batam in Indonesia. That regional footprint, run today under state broadcaster Mediacorp, has helped the station build an audience that spans three countries on a single terrestrial frequency.
