Launched as the Green Network in 1951
The station's history stretches back further than almost any other in Singapore. An all-Chinese radio service was announced in December 1950 and launched on January 1, 1951 under the name the Green Network, broadcasting Chinese dialect programming out of what was then Radio Malaya Singapore. It later became the Chinese Service of Radio Television Singapore before moving onto its current 95.8 MHz FM frequency in 1967.
Four Names Before Settling on Capital
The station carried the name Radio 3 starting in 1982, then rebranded as 95.8 City Channel in 1991, before finally adopting the Capital name it has carried since. Through all of those changes, it held a unique position as the only Mandarin station in Singapore right up until Mediacorp launched its two sister stations, YES 933 in 1990 and Love 972 in 1994, both of which effectively grew out of the audience and infrastructure Capital had already built over four decades.
Still a Top-Ten Singapore Station
That long head start has aged well. A 2022 Nielsen survey ranked Capital 958 as Singapore's fourth-highest-rated radio station overall, a strong position for a station built on a classic hits format rather than current chart music. The station moved its operations from its longtime home at Caldecott Hill to Mediacorp's new campus at one-north on February 8, 2017, closing out a chapter that had run since the broadcaster's earliest decades.
