From a Rock Station Named After a Lizard to France's Rap Giant
Skyrock did not start out as a rap station at all. Pierre Bellanger founded it on March 21, 1986, originally under the name "La Voix du Lézard," before quickly repositioning it to chase a young audience hungry for new music, according to a history of the station. The shift to rap came a decade later and was driven partly by regulation: when French law began requiring that 40 percent of songs aired carry original French-language lyrics starting January 1, 1996, Skyrock turned to the country's emerging homegrown rap scene to fill that quota, a decision that reshaped the station's entire identity. Fred Musa had already started showcasing French rap artists on air back in 1992, and his show Planète Rap grew into a weekly institution where rappers perform freestyle live, still running today alongside Difool's long-running morning show.
Carrying That Identity Into French-Speaking Africa
Skyrock Abidjan launched in 2017 as part of a deliberate expansion into French-speaking Africa, followed by sister stations in Algiers in 2018 and Casablanca in 2019. The push reflects a simple demographic reality: roughly 80 percent of the world's 240 million French speakers live in Africa, making the continent central to the language's future rather than a side market, and Skyrock's African "mobiradio" stations position the brand's rap identity directly inside that growth.
What You'll Hear
Skyrock Abidjan mixes rap and urban hits with African pop and afrobeat, adapting the network's French rap DNA to a local Ivorian audience rather than simply rebroadcasting the Paris feed.
