FIP's origin story has almost nothing to do with rock music at all. The network, originally called France Inter Paris, launched at 5pm on January 5, 1971, created by radio-television executive Roland Dhordain alongside producers Jean Garetto and Pierre Codou, according to a history of the station. The idea behind it was almost meditative: carve out a moment of softness amid Paris' crowded ring road, a commercial-free pocket of calm free from the noise pollution of a chaotic city, interrupted only by brief mentions of cultural events worth knowing about.
From One Signal to a Family of Themed Streams
That original concept stayed intact even as FIP grew far beyond a single Paris signal, eventually inspiring sister stations in other French cities that kept the same commercial-free music format with local names like FIB and FIM for their own cities. In the digital era, FIP split its own famously eclectic catalogue, jazz, rock, world music, hip-hop, blues, electronic and classical all mixed on the main signal, into dedicated single-genre streams.
