Belgium's French-Language Classical Station

Listen Now

Musiq3 streams classical music in French from Brussels, and once a year that programming turns into a live front-row seat to one of the most prestigious classical music competitions in the world. The station carries the Concours Reine Elisabeth, the Queen Elisabeth Competition, broadcasting rounds live from the Flagey concert hall and Palais des Beaux-Arts as young pianists, violinists, cellists and singers compete for a title that has launched major international careers. It streams free on Radio Shuffle for listeners anywhere.

The station's history runs back to 1 October 1961, when it first went on air as the Troisième Programme of RTB, Belgium's then-public broadcaster, created by director-general Robert Wangermée specifically to give classical music its own dedicated channel. It later became Radio Trois in the late 1970s, then Musique 3 in October 1994, before settling on its current branding, Musiq'3, during an RTBF restructuring in March 2004. Across all those name changes, the mission stayed fixed on serious classical programming for French-speaking Belgium.

The Queen Elisabeth Competition coverage is where that mission becomes genuinely international. Each edition rotates between piano, violin, cello and voice, and Musiq3 has broadcast it in depth for years, airing semi-finals live, running archive specials profiling past laureates, and publishing round-by-round listening guides so audiences can follow unfamiliar young performers through the whole competition rather than just catching the final result. The station also runs its own Festival Musiq3 in Brussels, extending that same commitment to live performance beyond the competition years.

For a station built entirely on one genre, that combination, deep archival respect alongside genuine excitement for new talent being discovered in real time, is what keeps Musiq3 relevant well past its original 1961 mission.
