A channel older than most national broadcasters
The channel's first broadcast dates back to 1 December 1958, according to Wikipedia's entry on Rai Radio 3 Classica, making it nearly as old as Italian television itself. It launched through Filodiffusione, a wired cable radio service RAI built with SIP, the company that later became Telecom Italia, delivering radio signals over telephone lines rather than the airwaves, an unusual distribution method for the era. The channel has carried several names over the decades, running as FD Auditorium, then Rai Radio FD 5, briefly as Rai Radio 5 Classica between 2015 and 2017, and as Rai Radio Classica until the end of 2019, before settling into its current branding.
Relaunched as part of a bigger digital push
RAI gave the channel fresh purpose in June 2017, presenting it as one of five new digital radio channels alongside a wider relaunch, with the classical channel positioned as the reference point for Italian and international cultured music spanning both ancient and contemporary repertoire. That relaunch moved the channel beyond its cable radio roots into DAB, digital terrestrial DVB-T, and online streaming through RaiPlay Sound, letting a channel built in the 1950s for wired distribution reach listeners through every major modern format.
A nightly handoff with Rai Radio 3
Rai Radio3 Classica has long had a close relationship with its sister station, Rai Radio 3, Italy's flagship culture and talk channel. For years Rai Radio 3 carried Rai Radio3 Classica's programming overnight, a handoff that lapsed when Rai Radio 3 began producing its own night programming in September 2017, only for the two stations to reconnect during the night hours again from August 2022. That back and forth says something about how closely RAI treats its spoken-word culture channel and its wall-to-wall classical channel as two halves of the same mission, rather than fully separate services.
