Flanders' Classical Music Radio Station

Listen Now

Klara streams classical music to Flanders and Brussels in Dutch, with the genre making up roughly three quarters of its schedule alongside real room for jazz, world music, film scores and experimental work. Concert recordings air under the Klara Live banner, captured from actual halls rather than studio sessions, giving listeners a direct line into Belgium's live classical scene. It streams free worldwide on Radio Shuffle.

The station's name is itself a small piece of branding history: Klara launched on 2 December 2000 as a rebrand of VRT Radio 3, with the new name shortened from "Klassieke Radio," Dutch for Classical Radio. It belongs to VRT, the Flemish public broadcaster, sitting alongside sister stations built for news, pop and youth audiences, with Klara carved out specifically for listeners who wanted serious music treated seriously. A fully digital, non-stop classical stream, Klara Continuo, followed on 29 February 2004, succeeding VRT's earlier DAB Classic service as the network's always-on classical companion.

Over two and a half decades, Klara has built programming that reaches well past passive listening. Iedereen Klassiek doubles as both a regular show and an annual public classical music festival, pulling the genre out of concert halls and into a wider civic event. De Jaren takes a slower, conversational approach, giving guests room for long-form discussion rather than soundbites. The station's podcasts have found an audience of their own in Flanders and beyond, with Eerste Hulp bij Klassiek, where two hosts take turns picking a piece they argue everyone should hear at least once, and De Bourgondiërs both becoming genuine favorites outside the usual classical-radio crowd.

That combination of rigor and accessibility is Klara's real achievement: a station built on a 75 percent classical repertoire that has still managed to make the genre feel approachable rather than intimidating, for an audience well beyond the people who already owned a season ticket.
