Rock radio tends to spread itself thin, covering everything from soft rock ballads to arena metal in the same hour. Rock Antenne Punkrock narrows that focus down to one specific corner: raw, fast, guitar-driven punk, mixing classic anthems with the underground bands that keep the genre's rebellious spirit alive.
The channel is a digital spin-off of Rock Antenne, a German rock station that went on air in 1995 and settled into regular broadcasting in 1999 as part of the Antenne Bayern group, based in Ismaning just outside Munich. The main station has since grown into one of the leading rock networks across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, picking up the Munich-area FM frequency 94.5 MHz in September 2017 and expanding into Austria's DAB+ multiplex in Vienna from April 2019. A 2022 survey put its daily Bavarian audience at around 590,000 listeners, numbers large enough that the parent brand could afford to branch out into tightly focused genre streams rather than squeeze every subculture onto one schedule.
Punkrock is one of those branches, and it carries a real weight of history. The genre built its identity on short songs, stripped-down arrangements and a deliberate rejection of rock's more polished instincts, running from the first wave of late-1970s bands through hardcore, pop-punk and the countless regional scenes that followed. A station dedicated purely to that sound does something a general rock schedule cannot: it treats punk as a tradition worth exploring in depth, not a genre to be sampled once an hour between other things.
That focus also makes room for newer and smaller acts. Alongside the genre's classic anthems, the channel promotes local and emerging punk bands, giving them airtime next to the artists who defined the sound decades earlier. For a scene that has always prized community and DIY credibility over mainstream polish, that pairing matters.
