The Newest Channel on an 18-Year-Old Network

Techno is one of the newer additions to Hirschmilch Radio, a non-commercial German internet station that first went live on December 31, 2008, built by an electronic music enthusiast known as baq. The station started with just electronic and progressive channels before steadily adding more over the years, chillout and psytrance in 2009, progressive house in 2012, and finally a dedicated techno channel in 2023, bringing the network to eight genre-specific streams running 24 hours a day.

A Sound Built in Detroit, Hardened in Berlin

Techno traces back to mid-1980s Detroit, where Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson built the genre's foundation, but Detroit never had much of a club scene to support it at home, so the music became an export almost by necessity. Berlin's Hard Wax record shop in Kreuzberg made some of the earliest contacts with Detroit labels, and Dimitri Hegemann's club Tresor became the venue that first brought Detroit producers to Germany, according to a history of the exchange covered by DJ Mag. Detroit's Underground Resistance collective, with Mike Banks, Jeff Mills and Robert Hood, pushed a harder sound than the genre's first wave, and that harder edge found a natural home in the warehouses and former East German sites that opened up after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989.

Raw, Relentless, Underground

Hirschmilch Techno's own pitch for its sound leans directly into that Berlin inheritance: pounding beats and dark soundscapes built for pure underground vibes. The channel's artist rotation includes names like Umek, Adam Beyer, Thomas Schumacher and Deborah de Luca, producers known for exactly the kind of stripped-down, floor-focused techno that grew out of the Detroit-Berlin exchange rather than techno's more melodic or trance-adjacent branches.

A Show Built Around One DJ's Underground Credentials

The channel's flagship program, Dark Signal, launched with resident DJ UИDGRØUND, whose sets are billed as pure techno: raw, relentless and underground, a tagline that doubles as a mission statement for the whole channel. It joined a run of other techno sessions on the channel, including recorded live sets from DJs like Beat@Work and Béla A.d.K., giving the stream a rotating cast of voices rather than a single static playlist.
