A Network Started by a Future Cardinal
RCF Nice Côte d'Azur is a local affiliate of RCF, a French-language Christian radio network created in 1982 at the initiative of Albert Decourtray, then Archbishop of Lyon and later a cardinal, together with the priest Emmanuel Payen, according to the network's own history. The project took shape with the bishops of the Rhône-Alpes region in 1984, and by 1988 every prefecture in that region had its own local station. The network expanded into Belgium in 1996, which is when the acronym's meaning shifted from "Radios chrétiennes en France" to "Radio Chrétienne Francophone," reflecting its growth beyond French borders. RCF now counts 64 local radios and 270 frequencies across France and Belgium, reaching roughly 600,000 listeners every day, run as donor-supported associations rather than a commercial broadcaster.
A Small Team Covering the Riviera's Religious Heritage
RCF Nice Côte d'Azur runs on a notably small team for a station covering an entire diocese, a single employee supported by around 20 volunteers. Among its distinctive local programming is Patrimoine religieux des Alpes-Maritimes, a show presented by Stèvelan Chaizy-Gostovitch that explores the churches and religious sites scattered across the Alpes-Maritimes department, tying the station's spiritual programming directly to the physical history of the region it serves.
