From a 25-Person California Church to a Global Movement
Koinonia Calvary Chapel Hannover belongs to the worldwide Calvary Chapel network, a movement that began in 1965 when Pastor Chuck Smith took over a small congregation of just twenty-five people in Costa Mesa, California. What started there grew directly out of the Jesus Movement of the early 1970s, when Smith began reaching out to the hippie counter-culture of Southern California, eventually expanding into a family of more than 1,700 churches across North America, Europe, Australia and beyond.
Live Services, Three Times a Day
The Hannover congregation streams its own services directly through Koinonia Radio, running early morning, morning and evening worship on a schedule tied to its own event calendar, with translation support offered during gatherings for a broader audience. Outside of live service hours, the stream shifts to devotional content and worship music, keeping the station active around the clock rather than only during scheduled broadcasts.
A Local Church With an International Family Tree
What makes Koinonia Radio worth tuning into beyond its own services is the lineage behind it. The Calvary Chapel movement also gave rise to pioneering Jesus music acts like Love Song and Children of the Day, whose early albums shaped the sound of contemporary Christian worship music still heard in churches like Koinonia today, decades after Chuck Smith's small Costa Mesa congregation first opened its doors to the counter-culture.
