Started by a couple who took over a school's radio station
The network behind The Joy FM traces back to May 1976, when Jim and Ruth Campbell took over management and programming of WCIE 91.3 FM, a non-commercial station in Lakeland, Florida owned by the Evangel Christian School, according to Wikipedia's history of Radio Training Network. That single station became the seed for what grew into RTN, a nonprofit Christian broadcasting organization now based in Port Richey, Florida.
From one Bradenton signal to a regional network
The Joy FM brand itself launched in 1986 on WJIS 88.1 FM in Bradenton, serving the Sarasota and Tampa Bay areas as a Christian adult contemporary station. RTN built outward from that flagship, and The Joy FM now runs across roughly a dozen FM stations and translators spanning Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, giving listeners across three states the same core lineup of contemporary Christian hits, worship music, and talk programming.
Programming built around daily encouragement
Beyond music, the network runs a daily Verse of the Day feature and weekday afternoon programming like Neallytime, along with community-facing events such as its annual 16 Bar Challenge.
